Howie Kangas Retires As Head Coach Of Wadena-Deer Creek Head Football Coach

The Activities Department for Wadena-Deer Creek High School has announced that Head Football Coach Howie Kangas is retiring.

Coach Kangas accumulated a 16-48 record since he took over as head coach in 2012. Among his accomplishments is leading the Wolverines to their first playoff win since 1998 when they beat Staples-Motley in 2017.

Norm Gallant, the Wadena-Deer Creek Activities Director, had nothing but great things to say about Kangas.

“The thing I didn’t realize though is what a great man and leader of young men we hired. The care, concern and respect he has shown to his players are what set him apart from others. In the era of InSideOut Coaching from the Minnesota State High School League, Howie has truly led our program in an educationally, ethically sound way. I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with Howie,”

It was also mentioned that the school will start looking for a new head coach immediately and that the job will be posted on the school website.
